Mobile apps are oftentimes a fun diversion, and sometimes they can make our lives better. It’s rare to find an app that does both of those things, but the Ad Council’s Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives has done just that. Endorsed by the American Dental Association or ADA, the mobile app known as Toothsavers uses a kid-friendly game to motivate children to brush their teeth. This app is free and is part of the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign to promote better oral hygiene habits for children.
As the ADAhas recommended, children should brush their teeth for at least two minutes, twice a day. Motivating kids to do this can be a real challenge, and games can be helpful in getting children to stick to their oral hygiene regimen. In this interactive game, children can rescue fairy tale characters from an evil sorceress who has cast a cavity-creating spell on a magical kingdom. However, Toothsavers isn’t only about fun and games, as there is also an educational element to the app. As Ad Council president and CEO Peggy Conlon states on the ADA website, the purpose of Toothsavers is “to help kids maintain healthy oral health habits, and have fun while doing it.”
Released on January 15 and geared toward children ages 3 through 6, Toothsavers features not only one-player and two-player versions of the game, but also has a tooth-brushing companion for children and parents to help them keep track of their brushing progress. Morning and nighttime brushing reminders are also included in the app. Gary Price, secretary and CEO of the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, sums it up by calling Toothsavers “a terrific way to get kids thinking about their teeth from an early age.”
Parents can get Toothsavers for free in the App Store and Google Play, and it is available for both Android and iOS devices. Toothsavers is also available on the worldwide web at 2min2x.org/PlayToothsavers.
