Husband and wife team opens new clinic

A dental clinic with state of the art equipment may be new in Morgan Hill, but the family who owns it has a long history in the community. In fact, the Huang family has called Morgan Hill home for three decades.

Andrew Huang, D.M.D., and his wife, Ann Lien, D.D.S, opened the Santa Teresa Dental Clinic in July, in between Dunne and Tennant Avenues. Andrew’s father is Dr. Frank Huang, M.D., a physician who has practiced in Morgan Hill for 30 years. The elder Huang encouraged his son and daughter-in-law to open their practice in the community.

“We know Morgan Hill well because of my father, “ Andrew said. “We like it because it’s a close-knit community. It’s slower-paced, easy going, it’s a place where you can get to know your patients.” And like his father, Andrew said, “We plan to stay here for a long, long time.”

The husband and wife are graduates of the University of California, Berkeley. Andrew received his dentistry degree in 2002 from Temple University School of Dentistry in Pennsylvania. Ann, who immigrated to the Bay Area from Taiwan when she was in her early teens, received her degree the following year from the University of California, San Francisco.

Huang and Lien, who married last year, practice general dentistry, and they are also trained in pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, root canal therapy, gum treatment, no brace brackets and cosmetic dentistry.

Together, the couple has 10 years of dental experience. Prior to opening their own dental facility in the community, Andrew and Ann worked together in a Bay Area dental clinic for two years. “That’s how we knew we could work together,” she said. This summer, they decided to open their own clinic in a spacious and family-friendly office, Ann said. “We try to make children as comfortable as possible,” she said, pointing to a children play area. In addition, while sitting on the dental chair, children as well as adults, can watch DVDs to make them more comfortable while Huang or Lien works on their teeth.

The new dental office offers the latest technology, including digital x-rays, which reduce harmful radiation by as much as 75 percent; a high heat sterilization process for their instruments; treatment chairs that perform massage functions, with a flat screen monitor that not only entertains, but also shows patients their x-ray results.

They also offer Zoom2 in-office teeth whitening, which only takes 45 minutes; Invisalign, which does away with the conventional metal brackets and instead uses clear, unnoticeable trays, and cosmetic dentistry like white fillings, veneers and all-porcelain crowns.

Andrew said he likes dentistry because of the manual dexterity it offers. Since he was a child, he has always had an interest in science. “When I was young, I loved putting models together and tinkering with things,” he said. “I always wanted to do something with my hands.”

Ann’s interest in dentsitry stems from her wanting to help people and spend time with them. “A dentist really spends time with patients,” she explained. “I like getting to know them.”

The couple is very comfortable with their practice. “We’ve seen a lot of cases. Perhaps, the most challenging for us now, would be growing our business.” Andrew said.

As part of the clinic’s grand opening celebration, they are offering a new patient special with a comprehensive exam, x-rays and consultation through Oct. 31. For details, call at (408) 782-6568.

Santa Teresa Dental Clinic, at 16160 Monterey Rd., Suite A, is open Monday and Friday 9am to 6pm; Tuesday and Thursday, 9am to 7pm; and Saturday, 9am to 3pm.
